About Us

As Junior STEM Ambassadors we plan to help young women by encouraging them to participate in STEM activities. The word STEM itself is a product of design.  Each letter in the word STEM has a meaning. In STEM the S represents Science the T means Technology the E means Engineering and the M stands for Math. As STEM ambassadors our action plan begins with the construction of a planetarium dome. In order to construct the dome, we used large sheets of cardboard, giant binder clips, a projector, and a parabolic mirror. We plan to follow pre-existing blueprints for the design and construction of our planetarium. Once completed, our planetarium can accommodate 25-30 people. We designed captivating shows of the starry night sky which are sure to capture young women’s interests. Our team has started by placing the planetarium in our school and then donate unused cardboard to schools to make their own planetarium. Once our plans have come to fruition we believe that we will have inspired many other young women like ourselves to pursue STEM careers and STEM related education. Although, even if we only reach one person and inspire that one young woman all of our efforts will have had worth. We believe we can make an impact one person at a time.

Hello, I am Rocio Rivera! I am the project and website manager for NASA Girls Build LA. I am in 7th grade at Palmdale Learning Plaza. I have been at PLP since kindergarten. I am always involved in many extracurricular activities such as sports, competitions, and clubs at my school. If I could describe myself with a few words, it will be: High achiever, GATE and IB student, and always going the extra mile... I love public speaking and when I was in second grade I did the Modern Woodmen Speech contest and I won first place, since then I do it every year; the same way  I also enjoyed doing Cyber Quest, last year we invented a GMO PH detector (app), and this year we addressed refugees to the united nations. I have participated in Science Olympiad for three years and we won a silver medal all three times. Last year I won a poetry slam and won first in writing my own poem. I also participated in a Spelling Bee. This year I ran for Student Board Member of Education and President of ASB. I am in Model UN this year where we each have a country and an organ in the United Nations, my country is Iran and I am in IPC, or International Press Corps. The Black Knowledge Bowl Competition is another thing I really enjoyed, we had to memorize Black History and our team got second in the entire school district! I have been in Mathletes for two years now, our team got 4th place! I placed 7th in the individual round too! I am a member of the Inter school Communication Council, and Counselor Advisory Committee. I was apart of the IBSC, or IB Service Club for one year and my school's Astronomy Club for another year. I have also participated in the Reflections Art Program Contest since kindergarten and have won numerous times.  I play piano, and trumpet. I love to read and write. I love acting and my dream is to one day play a lead role in a good movie! I also see myself becoming a lawyer! I have a younger brother and sister and they both keep my life exciting and interesting! Girls Build LA has shown me that there is a place for me in STEM!
